Kukeldash Medrese in Usbekistan
? Jan Raue

From the 15th to the 30th of June 2023, the FH Potsdam invites you to view impressions from Uzbekistan in the foyer of its main building. The exhibition includes painted works by Uzbek artists and partners of the FH Potsdam, as well as photos that give an impression of the art and culture of Uzbekistan. The vernissage will take place on the 16th of June 2023 at 11.30 am in the foyer of the main building.

The relationship between the FH Potsdam and Uzbekistan, which has existed since the late 1990s with numerous research and transfer projects, is exemplary for the interdisciplinary profile line "Design ? Build ? Preserve " of the departments of CITY | BUILDING | CULTURE and Civil Engineering. Particular cooperation projects with Uzbekistan include the foundation reinforcement at the Tilla-Kari mosque in Samarkand (2002–2006), the restoration of the ceramic decoration of the Shadi-Mulk-Aga mausoleum in Samarkand (2004–2006), the conservation of the majolica-decorated fa?ade of the Abdul-Aziz-Khan madrasa in Bukhara (2006–2008) and the research with partial implementation for the preservation of the Ishrat-Khane mausoleum in Samarkand (2009–2011). Between 2011 and 2015, the Volkswagen Foundation also funded an "Uzbek-German Centre for Architecture and Construction" with a joint Master's degree course in "Building Conservation and Monument Preservation" in cooperation with five other universities in Tashkent on the initiative of the University of Applied Sciences Potsdam.

The existing partnerships with the universities for architecture and construction in Tashkent and Samarkand were expanded in 2019 to include Bukhara State University, and since this year the number of university partners in Uzbekistan has increased to five with Samarkand State University and the Bukhara Engineering Technological Institute.

Currently (2021–2023), the "Eastern Partnerships" project "Interdisciplinary at the Monument" is running with the three original university partners from Uzbekistan, which is funded by the DAAD with funds from the Federal Foreign Office. One aspect of the current project was the summer school, which took place for a fortnight in September 2022 in cooperation with the Uzbek partners at the Kukeldash Medrese in Bukhara. Professors, scientists and students from the fields of architecture, civil engineering and conservation and restoration worked on the documentation basis for the preservation of the 17th century monument, among other things. In addition, the project regularly brings guest researchers and students to Potsdam.

The exhibition brings cultural and artistic impressions of the country to the FH Potsdam. On display are photos taken during the summer school as well as paintings by students and lecturers from the partner universities. The exhibition is being realised by Ragnar Wilczek in cooperation with Uzbek students at the FH Potsdam, the International Office and the departments of CITY | BUILDING | CULTURE and Civil Engineering. The exhibition is financed by the DAAD with funds from the Federal Foreign Office as part of the STIBET programme.
