Students help shape Media Publicity: EMW Seminar brings Diversity of Oopinion from Berlin and Brandenburg to Television

As part of a two-semester practical seminar in the European Media Studies (EMW) programme, a cooperative study programme of the University of Applied Sciences Potsdam and the University of Potsdam, students have developed talk shows on socially relevant topics in close cooperation with ALEX Berlin, the open channel of the Medienanstalt Berlin-Brandenburg (mabb). The programmes are based on a collection of authentic opinions expressed by citizens, which were recorded in a mobile interview booth – the so-called "ALEX Talkbox" – in Berlin and Brandenburg in the summer of 2024.
The resulting contributions show in an impressive way how media practice, teaching and social commitment can be linked together. "The project combines theory and practice in an exemplary way. The students not only worked on the content and concept, but also accompanied the entire production process – from the development of the questions to the implementation of the TV programmes," says Dr Katrin von Kap-herr, seminar leader on the EMW course. "The fact that their work is now being broadcast publicly on television and online shows how young media makers can actively shape social discourse."
The first themed programmes "Political climate between the capital and the surrounding area" and "Tiny houses, a forest in the neighbourhood and finding accommodation for migrants" have already been broadcast and can still be accessed on demand via ALEX Berlin. A further three programmes on topics such as housing, artificial intelligence, relationship culture and mobility will follow in April in ALEX Berlin's TV programme and online offering.

About the ALEX Berlin Talkbox
The Talkbox was developed by ALEX Berlin as a mobile interview format and toured Berlin and Brandenburg in summer 2024. Technically equipped with a microphone, screen and moderating video clips, it enabled people from the region to express themselves on various topics in a low-threshold manner – and thus actively contribute to diversity of opinion. The material was used to create discursive TV formats that are analysed and developed further by experts in the programmes.
About the European Media Studies (EMW) degree programme
The cooperative degree programme offered by the University of Applied Sciences Potsdam and the University of Potsdam combines cultural studies, theoretical and creative-practical perspectives on media. Students deal with current developments in media culture and also try out their own practical media projects – from video and audio formats to exhibitions and interactive applications. The close integration of theory and practice prepares them specifically for work in the media and cultural sector.
