"Trotz(t)dem" – Potsdam Universities with Cult Film and Party at the Brandenburg Women's Weeks

The Equal Opportunities Offices of the University of Applied Sciences Potsdam and the Film University Babelsberg KONRAD WOLF as well as the Equal Opportunities Office of the University of Potsdam invite you to "The Watermelon Woman", a cult film of the New Queer Cinema of the 1990s, on the 14th of March at 6.30 pm in the cinema of the Potsdam Film Museum. The occasion is the 35th Brandenburg Women's Weeks, which this year have the motto "Trotz(t)dem!". Film historian Dr. Johanne Hoppe will introduce the film, which will be shown in its original version with German subtitles. The evening will end with a party in the foyer of the museum.
With lightness and humour, Cheryl Dunye's debut film "The Watermelon Woman" (USA 1996, 90') opens up new perspectives on racism and film history: Cheryl is a lesbian Black filmmaker. She works in a video store in Philadelphia. Fascinated by films from the 1930s and 40s in which people of colour play leading roles without being named in the credits, she researches an actress known only as Watermelon Woman and begins to make a documentary about her. While Cheryl deals with the racist mechanisms of film history, she realises that her white friend desires her primarily because of her skin colour. The subversive elements and empowerment strategies made the comedy a cult film of the New Queer Cinema of the 1990s.
The film, which will be shown in its original version with German subtitles, will be introduced with a lecture by Potsdam film historian Dr Johanne Hoppe. Afterwards, the organisers invite you to a bring your own bottle party in the foyer of the Film Museum to celebrate together and get into conversation under the motto "Trotz(t)dem!".
The Brandenburg Women's Weeks are a unique political format in Germany that committed women bring to life every year. From the 1st to the 31st of March, more than 200 events are held throughout the state of Brandenburg by a wide variety of initiatives and organisations that address discrimination and convey demands to society and politics. The aim is to provide comprehensive information, strengthen networking and encourage each other.
