Profile

Ensure new construction and maintenance of structures

The design and calculation of structures are an essential focus of the degree programme. This is done on the basis of mathematical-technical and scientific knowledge and methods. They are used, for example, in the planning of load-bearing structures, the selection of building materials and the dimensioning of components, the determination of the load-bearing capacity of the building ground or those measures that become necessary in the meantime during the construction of buildings.

Apart from the construction disciplines, construction management is another focus. This involves planning and managing the implementation of construction projects. This concerns the selection of construction methods, the economic efficiency in the planning and execution of construction work, as well as the cooperation with all planners and the contractors directly on the construction site in compliance with all legal regulations. In addition to new construction, the preservation of buildings and building in the existing fabric is of great importance.

Is this degree programme right for me?

The high level of practical relevance of the dualdegree programme in civil engineering allows you to enter the professional world at an early stage. You can apply what you have learned in theory directly at one of the cooperating practical sites. The parallel study and practice requires good organisation and communication skills. At the same time, the digital orientation of the degree programme allows you a lot of flexibility and you are in constant exchange with the lecturers.

You bring these qualities with you

  • Interest in construction processes and structures
  • High mathematical, physical and technical understanding
  • IT affinity and an openness towards digital solutions
  • Problem solving skills
  • Organisational skills
  • Independent working style
  • Teamwork and communication skills

Career prospects

Career prospects

Civil engineers are sought-after specialists with a high level of responsibility. Therefore, career starters are offered very good prospects upon successful completion of the degree programme. You will already grow into your practical company during the dual study programme, which gives you many opportunities both there and on the labour market.

Civil engineers can choose to become self-employed, for example with an engineering office, or you can opt for employment in a company in the construction industry, the building trade, project management or similar. A subsequent Master's degree is also possible.

Possible areas of application

  • Road construction company
  • Building construction and civil engineering companies
  • Construction planning departments
  • Construction management
  • Property developers
  • Building materials industry
  • Architect's office
  • Distribution
  • Manufacturers of building products
  • Development departments
  • Public administrations
  • Consultancy and expert opinions
  • Facility management etc.

Prepared for the world of work

The civil engineering degree programme prepares you to competently handle the following situations:

  • You will accompany the construction of a new building as well as construction measures on existing buildings from the first sketch to completion, e.g. the construction of a factory building, the conversion and modernisation of a residential building or the maintenance of a railway bridge.
  • To do this, you design, construct and calculate the individual parts of the structure from the foundation to the roof. You decide on the construction method, select the building elements and the suitable materials such as steel, wood, masonry or concrete.
  • You ensure that the structure meets both legal and technical requirements. For example, you accompany the approval procedure and ensure stability as well as compliance with the current requirements for energy efficiency and emission protection.
  • You plan and control the execution of construction projects in the office and on the construction site. In dialogue with architects, specialist planners, building owners and the companies carrying out the work, you ensure the completion of the building project with regard to time, costs and quality.
  • You work on technical problems independently and systematically in a team as well as individually on the basis of scientific working methods. In doing so, you apply your knowledge and skills, e.g. in the use of specialised software, and expand your knowledge as required. You support decision-making processes, e.g. through reports and presentations.

Study content

Course of studies

The standard period of study for the full-time civil engineering degree programme is eight semesters and concludes with a Bachelor of Engineering degree.

In the dual Bachelor's programme in civil engineering, university semesters alternate with practical phases and semesters that are completed at the training partner. The theoretical and practical phases are coordinated with each other in terms of content. Students are therefore bound to the course of study according to the standard curriculum. This consists of compulsory modules in structural engineering and infrastructure systems, compulsory elective modules and concludes with a Bachelor's thesis and its defence.

Semester 1 – 2

Compulsory modules, basic studies: Structural engineering, infrastructure systems
Practical periods

Semester 3 – 4 Compulsory modules, basic studies: structural engineering
Practical periods
Semester 5 Practical semester
Semester 6 – 7

Compulsory modules, in-depth studies, elective modules,
Practical periods

Semester 8 Practical semester,
Bachelor thesis and colloquium

Study content

During the first four semesters, students learn the technical and scientific basics of civil engineering. In the sixth and seventh semesters, the specialised knowledge is deepened and an individual focus is set through elective modules.

In the currently valid module handbooks and study and examination regulations of the civil engineering department you will find the module overview, a detailed description of the modules and study contents as well as the study plan for the dual degree programme in civil engineering.
