Mobility Systems Laboratory

Tisch mit Monitoren
? Oliver Schneider

Are we really experiencing the greatest revolution since the invention of the railway and the automobile? To answer this question, we combine innovative concepts with planning and simulation tools in the mobility systems laboratory, which help us to design new solutions and take a look into the future.

Topic

New mobility systems are currently preparing to revolutionise the transport of people and goods. New digital technologies and business ideas provide information about mobility services, but also offer innovative approaches to planning and operation.

New digital technologies can only solve mobility challenges in our cities and regions if they are developed in an integrated manner with the building infrastructure and the services offered by transport companies. For example, autonomous vehicles will still be using our transport infrastructure in a few years' time. But how must the infrastructure design be adjusted to new vehicles in order to create a safe, efficient and environmentally friendly mobility system? We will increasingly use bicycles, which will have to cover much longer distances thanks to electric assistance. But here too, how does the cycle path network need to be fundamentally redesigned in order to achieve the desired effects on the choice of mode of transport in our growing cities? Will we still need our own means of transport in the future, or will mobility-as-a-service offerings allow us to choose the cheapest means of transport?

Equipment

These planning and simulation tools are available:

  • Geographical Information Systems
  • Macroscopic and microscopic traffic simulation
  • CAD systems with 3-D representations of road spaces and BIM interfaces
  • Tools for the integrated design of business processes and software architectures
