Urban water management organises the handling of drinking water, service water, wastewater and rainwater in and around settlements – these can be individual homesteads or villages, cities of all sizes or metropolises. The hygienic supply of clean drinking water and the healthy and environmentally sound disposal of wastewater are a fundamental component of elementary public services.
During the degree programme, university semesters alternate with practical semesters, which are completed at the training partner. The theoretical and practical phases are coordinated with each other in terms of content.
Urban Water Management | Dual (BEng)
Profile
Closely connected with nature and the environment
The organisation covers the planning, construction and operation of facilities for urban water management, e.g. waterworks, supply networks, sewer networks or sewage treatment plants. In Germany, it is usually assigned to civil engineering. Drinking water supply technically includes water extraction, water treatment, water storage, water transport and water distribution up to individual buildings. Wastewater disposal (sewage and rainwater) is divided into wastewater drainage, wastewater collection, wastewater treatment and sewage sludge treatment. Special structures below the earth's surface such as separating structures, relief structures or rainwater retention basins are part of the underground sewer network. Rainwater management includes, among other things, the unsealing of surfaces, rainwater retention, rainwater drainage and rainwater discharge conditions (receiving waters).
Since the element of water is not a common commodity but a human right, it must be treated and safeguarded with the principles of sustainability. Consequently, the fields of activity in urban water management are closely linked to aspects of nature and the environment.
Does this degree programme suit you?
The dual degree programme in urban water management holds an exciting mix of elements of civil engineering and hydrology. If you are interested in how rainwater infiltration systems work, how valuable groundwater is protected or how underground sewer networks are planned, then this subject is the best option.
For this, you should have a basic interest in construction processes and an understanding of mathematics and physics. Digital tools and software programmes are used for the planning and dimensioning of the systems, which requires basic IT knowledge and affinity.
The parallel study and practice requires good organisation and a solution-oriented, independent way of working. Your communication skills are in demand, as you will be in constant exchange with a team of architects, construction company contractors and other stakeholders in the office and on the construction site.

Career Prospects
Career prospects
Did you know that Germany is a world leader in plant engineering for urban water management? As specialists in demand, good prospects open up for you upon completion of the dual study programme in urban water management. Since you already gain professional experience in a company during your studies, this additionally increases your career opportunities.
Possible areas of application
- Water and wastewater associations
- public administrations
- Planning offices
- Construction management
- Manufacturers of plant technology
- Manufacturers of building products
- In the distribution sector
- Expert or advisory activities
Prepared for the world of work
The dual degree programme in urban water management prepares you to competently manage the following situations:
- You will accompany the construction of new urban water management facilities as well as construction measures on existing facilities from the first sketch to completion, e.g. the construction of a sewage treatment plant, the conversion and modernisation of a waterworks or the renovation of a sewer network.
- To do this, you design, construct and calculate the individual parts of the plants from the pipe to the digestion tower. You decide on the construction method, select the construction elements and the suitable materials and technologies.
- You ensure that the plants comply with both legal and technical requirements. For example, you accompany the approval procedure and ensure compliance with the current requirements for the purification performance of the waterworks.
- You plan and control the execution of construction projects in the office and on the construction site. In dialogue with architects, specialist planners, building owners and the companies carrying out the work, you ensure the completion of the construction project with regard to time, costs and quality.
- You will operate the water supply and sanitation systems and ensure that drinking water flows out of the tap at all times and that the wastewater is cleaned in accordance with the state of the art so that the water bodies are not polluted.
- Youwork on technical problems independently and systematically in teams and individually on the basis of scientific working methods. You apply their knowledge and skills, e.g. in the use of specialised software for the planning and dimensioning of facilities as well as geo-information software for the computer-assisted networking of all information on the inventory of facilities, and expand their knowledge as required. You support decision-making processes, e.g. through reports and presentations.
- In addition to the classic range of activities, you can work for manufacturers of construction products and plant technology (Germany is the world leader in plant technology for urban water management), in sales and in advisory and expert activities.
