Dr Birgit Schmidt appointed honorary professor in the Department of Information Sciences at the University of Applied Sciences Potsdam

The University of Applied Sciences Potsdam is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr Birgit Schmidt as Honorary Professor in the Department of Information Science in the Library Science programme. Dr Birgit Schmidt is an international expert in the field of library and information science, specialising in open science, information access and digital transformation processes. She currently heads the staff unit "Knowledge as a Common Good" at the Lower Saxony State and University Library (SUB), one of the largest and most renowned academic libraries in Germany.
The new honorary professor started teaching the "Digital long-term archiving" module at the start of the 2025 summer semester. It is important to her that students benefit from her practical experience. "I'm looking forward to passing on my passion for library and information science and critical thinking while working with students and colleagues to promote pioneering projects."
Prof Dr Ulrike Wuttke, Head of the Library Science programme, welcomes the appointment, saying: "Dr Birgit Schmidt's outstanding contributions to the development of Open Science infrastructures, her academic expertise and international networking are an excellent fit with the aims and philosophy of our programme. With her background in mathematics and philosophy, she will also greatly promote interdisciplinary exchange." On the 1st of April 2025, she received her certificate of appointment from President Prof Dr Eva Schmitt-Rodermund. The inaugural lecture will take place in the winter semester and will be announced via the FHP channels.
