On 25th of April 2025, the Department of Design at the University of Applied Sciences Potsdam invites you to the 4th edition of the Further Reading Symposium. This year, the focus will be on Designing for Readability. Together with leading design studios, designers and researchers, we will explore the intersections of language, typography, accessibility and empowerment through design.

The symposium will be accompanied by the Further Reading exhibition Language and Text as Means of Inclusion, which will be officially opened on 24th of April at 6 pm as part of the Berliner Typostammtisch – a special opportunity for exchange and networking.

Further Reading Exhibition | Language and Text as Means of Inclusion

Language has a profound effect on our thinking, our perception and our interactions. It is not only a means of communication, but also a powerful tool that can promote social inclusion or reinforce exclusion. Language has the power to bring people together and create a community in which all members feel heard and understood. To what extent do youth language, simple language, gender-sensitive language and educational language, for example, influence our communication, our identity and our social structures? What influence do the different forms of language have on our social interaction? How can we as designers visualise this awareness and encourage discussion and reflection? How can we use design to make texts accessible or inaccessible? How can we influence readability?

In the seminar Further Reading – Language and Text as a Means of Inclusion, students examine various areas of inclusion and exclusion of spoken and written language.

Talks

About the Typostammtisch: The Berliner Typostammtisch is dedicated to the topic of typography. At regular meetings, there are lively discussions in a relaxed atmosphere, mutual presentations of current work or further education with lectures - sometimes the Typostammtisch also organises excursions or exhibitions.

Sharing great topics with nice people is the core of the regulars' table, all those interested in letters are very welcome!
The team will let you know when, where and how the next Typostammtisch will take place on the website, on Instagram and as an invitation via newsletter!

Further Reading Symposium | Designing for Readability

Linguistic and design decisions shape accessibility, inclusion and the way we interact with text. Typography influences not only how we read, but also who the written language speaks to. How can typography and language break down prejudices and improve readability for different target groups? How can writing systems be rethought to accommodate non-binary forms of expression? What visual strategies promote both clarity and diversity? What conventions should be reconsidered to create a future where typography is both functional and culturally resonant? The symposium Further Reading - Designing for Readability explores how inclusive design can create new opportunities for representation and participation.

Further Reading is organised by the Department of Design at Potsdam University of Applied Sciences. The annual symposium explores the future of reading and the design of texts.
