Lecture Series "Continuity and Transformation"

Experts have been invited to offer exciting contributions and food for thought on continuity and transformation in architecture. A panel discussion following the presentations will provide an opportunity for dialogue.

The lecture series "Continuity and Transformation" consists of five evenings in which the invited experts will explore the relationship between "continuity" and "transformation" from different perspectives and on different scales: How much continuity is transformation based on? What potential for transformation lies in continuity?

These questions touch on core issues of contemporary building. In architecture and urban planning, it is essential to reflect on the traditions of preservation, maintenance and prudent change if not only the immense consumption of resources by a construction industry that continues to focus primarily on new construction is to be significantly reduced, but also if the preservation of architectural values is to be ensured in the long term. This is accompanied by conceptual, but also technical, planning and regulatory challenges. A look at history reveals that transformation, further development and remodelling have been the rule, not the exception, for a long time. The creative dialogue with the inertial forces of the existing – existing buildings, codes of use or cultural practices – unleashes immense potential, which the lectures will explore.

The lectures are open to the public, no registration is required.

The series is curated by: Bernd Bess (Professor of Fundamentals of Design), Maren Brakebusch (Professor of Garden and Landscape Architecture), Lennard Dose (Academic Assistant for Design and Representation), Peter Eingartner (Professor of Design and Building Construction), Hannah Jonas (Professor of Design and Typology) and Rainer Schützeichel (Professor of History of Architecture and Urban Planning).
