Qualification Professorship
The instrument of the qualification professorship can be used to retain academics or practitioners who do not yet fulfil all the requirements for appointment as a professor at a university of applied sciences. Qualification professorships are advertised and require the completion of an appointment procedure.
Requirements for employment as a qualifying professor
In accordance with Section 49 BbgHG, a person may be appointed as a qualifying professor if they have at least
- a completed university degree and
- in addition, a special aptitude for scientific work, usually through the quality of a doctorate
or
special achievements in the application or development of scientific knowledge and methods in at least three years of professional practice, of which at least two years must have been spent outside the university sector (§ 43 paragraph 1 sentence 2 applies accordingly). - and ideally pedagogical aptitude
can prove.
Within the framework of the qualification professorship, a qualified doctorate (so-called doctoral track) or the missing special practical professional achievements outside the university sector (so-called practical track) can be acquired over a period of up to four years.
Probation determination
In a second appointment procedure, it is determined whether the qualification objective has been achieved and whether the person has proven themselves as a university lecturer. The assessment of probation is a prerequisite for appointment to a permanent professorship.
General conditions
Qualification professors are employed as salaried employees during the qualification period and are remunerated in the same way as junior professors (W1). Subject to a probationary assessment and fulfilment of the requirements for a civil service appointment, qualification professors can be promised a civil service appointment to a professorship (W2).
Upon appointment as a qualifying professor, the academic title of "professor" is conferred, which is used in this status until the end of the employment relationship (Section 51 (1) BbgHG).
Qualifying professors thus belong to the group of university lecturers in terms of status, with the associated rights and obligations, unless the law provides for exceptions in individual cases.
